How to read Komatsu model numbers
This page is a short reference on how to read komatsu model numbers. PC200-8, PC200LC-8, PC138US-8, PC35MR — what each part of a Komatsu excavator model name actually tells you.
Komatsu PC excavator model names follow one pattern
A Komatsu excavator model name is built from a family code, a size number and a generation suffix, plus optional letter codes. Once you know the pattern you can read any PC model quickly.
The family code
PC is the Komatsu excavator family (as opposed to PW for wheeled machines). A trailing letter group can follow the size number — for example LC for long undercarriage, US for the utility version, MR for minimum radius (short tail swing), and N1 or similar for a market-specific variant.
The size number
The number after PC is a class indicator, not a weight in kilograms. PC20 sits in the mini class, PC60 to PC80 in the compact class, PC130 to PC200 in the standard classes, and PC300 and above in the large and mining classes. The exact working weight depends on boom, arm, bucket, counterweight and track shoes.
The generation suffix
The trailing numeral after a hyphen marks the series — PC200-7, PC200-8, PC200-10 and so on. It tells you which generation the machine is, which matters for parts availability and for how familiar local workshops are with it.
Why this matters when buying used
The same size number in different generations is a different machine, and price follows generation as much as hours. When you are quoted a machine, ask for the full model name including the suffix, and match it to the plate on the unit.
